RTI

RTI is response intervention for students struggling with reading in the classroom. RTI implementation works like this. The whole class receives literacy instruction. The teacher monitors the students carefully and anyone who seems to be falling behind are given additional help and instruction. Students in this category who do not seem to be improving are evaluated to identify their difficulties and are then given specific instruction that is best suited to them. These students receive individual instruction from special ed teachers and professionals. This intervention system is great because struggling students are given very exact and specific instruction. Additionally, they receive extra help within the classroom which is often easier and less embarrassing for students. RTI seems to require so much time, energy and focus from the teacher. I wonder how teachers can implement it in the classroom…. Perhaps a special teacher aid could come in every day for a set amount of time...

QRI5

Qualitative Reading Inventory 5 is a method to assess students. This type of assessment has multiple purposes; it assesses students reading level, their comprehension and what type of intervention is necessary. the purpose is to discover where the child's difficulties lie and the best type of intervention. I have administered running records and assessment questions but never a complete QRI5. it sounds like a useful and very thorough assessment. I like that it also takes into account students level of understanding and feelings (such as frustration etc.) the assessment can aid teachers and their assistants the correct way to help their students. My concern is that it seems like a long assessment to administer to a student in one sitting. Any suggestions?
